Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the first step toward admission to the SIUE School of Pharmacy?

If you are a high school student, take as many mathematics and science courses as you can. Even though the SIUE School of Pharmacy will not look at your high school grades, a good science/math background will prepare you for the many science courses that are included in the pre-pharmacy curriculum. You will spend at least the first two years of college completing courses in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics as well as completing some general education courses. Check the pre-pharmacy curriculum to see the list of courses you will be required to complete before applying to the SIUE School of Pharmacy.

If you are in college now, then begin taking courses toward completion of the pre-pharmacy curriculum. If you are a taking the pre-Pharmacy courses at a college or university other than SIUE, check the Web site for transfer course articulation lists to ensure that the course(s) will transfer.

Q: Does SIUE admit students directly from high school to the Doctor of Pharmacy program?

No. The SIUE Doctor of Pharmacy degree is based on the 2+4 model. This means that students who are admitted to the School of Pharmacy have already completed at least two years of college coursework.

Q: Do I have to complete the pre-Pharmacy curriculum at SIUE?

No. You may complete the pre-Pharmacy curriculum at any regionally accredited college or university.

Q: How do I apply for admission?

Applications for the fall of 2010 will be available on August 1, 2009.  Students apply directly to the SIUE School of Pharmacy.  Admission to the pharmacy program is expected to be highly competitive.  Your cumulative GPA, your GPA in the pre-pharmacy curriculum, and your GPA in science courses will all be taken into consideration by the Admissions Committee. A minimum GPA of 2.5 in all the aforementioned areas is required. However, achievement of the minimum GPA does not ensure admission to the program.

You will be responsible for submitting all required documents to complete your application file to the University. The application file will include the following:

     - An application to the SIUE School of Pharmacy.

    - A non-refundable $40 application fee.

    - Three grade point average calculation work sheets, which can be printed from the online application.

    - Two recommendation forms, which can be printed from the online application.

    - Official copies of all college transcripts. (Students who have attended SIUE only, or who are currently enrolled at SIUE, do not need to submit copies of transcripts.)

    - PCAT scores.  http://www.PCATweb.info

    - A signed Accreditation Statement, which can be printed from the online application.

Q: Can I apply to the SIUE School of Pharmacy before I complete all the pre-pharmacy requirements?

Yes.  You should begin the application process one year before your intended start date.

Part of the application process includes the completion of three grade point average calculation forms. On these forms you must clearly demonstrate how you will complete the entire pre-pharmacy curriculum prior to the beginning of term in which you wish to start. Your grade point averages will be calculated based upon the courses you have completed. If you are admitted to the SIUE School of Pharmacy while you are in the process of completing pre-pharmacy courses your admission will be provisional based upon completion of the outstanding course(s) and maintenance of an academic record consistent with prior performance.
